2005 Spring Sports Champs Crowned
Lady Lions win BDC track title C'ville's Hendricks wins state pole vault title Toby Brown / Carmi Times Sports Editor
Scott Hendricks' Carterville Lady Lions defended their Black Diamond Conference girls' track championship at Carmi's Harrington Track by edging Eric Dixon's host Carmi-White County Lady Bulldogs 159-144. Eldorado finished third with 65, followed by Fairfield (57), Johnston City (46), Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton (45), Hamilton County (41), Sesser-Valier (23) and Cairo (1). Eight new conference records were established at the 2005 meet, four of them by the champs. Carterville's 800-meter medley team of Dani Davis, Rachel Simmons, Emily Stocks and Kelly Johnston set a record pace of 1 minute, 56.4 seconds; Katherine Hendricks won the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches; Kali Bonner took the tape in the 3,200-meter run in a record time of 12:24.3; and Tarana Nekzad took the blue ribbon in the 800-meters in 2:29.5. The hosts set two new records, as CWC's Tiffney Whitley won the 1,600-meter run in 5:42.9 and the Lady Bulldogs' 4 x 400-meter relay team of Ayla Ellison, Jennifer Clayton, Abbey Gholson and Mallory Gee posted a winning time of 4:28.2. Other conference records were set by the Fairfield 4 x 800-meter relay team of Quinnyka Smith, Maggie Sheraden, Anise Vaughn and Stacy Combs (10:31.8); and Johnston City's Toni Whitfield in the 400-meters (1:00.8). Eldorado's Megan Harbison was the only two-time individual winner at the meet, earning the top spot in the shot put (36-4) and the discus (103-4). Other conference champs included Hamilton County's Jessica Whitlow in the long jump (14-11 1/2); Carterville's 4 x 100-meter relay team (52.9), 4 x 200-meter team (1:54.2), Dani Davis in the 100-meters (13.1) and Emily Stocks in the 200-meters (27.3); Carmi-White County's Jenny Bingman in the high jump (4-10) and Brooke McCartney in the triple jump (31-6); CZR's Anna Marchetti in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.2); and Eldorado's Maura Bartok in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (49.8). Carterville's Katherine Hendricks won the IHSA Class A state championship in the pole vault with a jump of 11' 2". Other BDC athletes placing in state competition were Johnston City's Toni Whitfield (7th, 400 M dash), Carterville's 4x200 M relay (7th), and in the 3200 M run, Kali Bonner (C'ville, 26th_ Tiffney Whitley (CWC, 28th) and Sharell Bradley (Eldorado, 39th). Defending champ Carterville won 11 of 18 events and finished a whopping 114 points ahead of second-place Carmi-White County at the Black Diamond Conference boys' track championships at Eldorado's Boz Adams Track and Field complex. The Lions amassed 184 points and broke four conference records on the day. Carmi/White County's Bulldogs took second with 70 points, followed by Sesser-Valier (62), Cairo (53), Hamilton County (51), Johnston City (39), CZR 37), Fairfield (35) and Eldorado (24). Carterville set new conference records while winning the 4 x 800-meter relay (8:29.35), the 4 x 100 (44.29) and the 4 x 200 (1:33.13). The Lions also got a record-breaking performance from Scott Geiger in the quarter-mile (50.82). Other record-setters included Fairfield junior Jeremy Puckett in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.67) and the 300-meter intermediates (40.02), and Sesser-Valier senior Jason Langhauser in the 100-meters (10.97) and 200-meters (22.31). Puckett and Langhauser were the only two-time individual winners on the day. In addition to those already listed, Carterville had conference champions in the shot put (Andre Sigler, 49-7), the discus (Andrew Martin, 139-8), the long jump (Tyler Harrell, 19-8), the high jump (Trevor Poore, 6-2), the half-mile (Tristan Willis, 2:06.54), the mile run (Jacob Sievers) and the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:36.18). Cairo's Torrell Hunt won the triple jump (41-8 1/4), Sesser-Valier's Stephen Whitehead the 3,200-meters (11:07.24) and the host team won the freshman 4 x 200-meter relay (1:43.30). Several BDC athletes placed in state competition at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Jason Langhauser of Sesser-Valier placed 3rd in the 200 M dash and 4th in the 100 M dash, while Carterville's Trevor Poore placed 3rd in the high jump. Cairo's Charles Johnson was 11th in the long jump and Carterville's 4x800 M relay team also placed 11th. Johston City Lady Indians win record 14th consecutive BDC title. The Johnston City Lady Indians won the BDC softball title for the 14th consecutive year, a record for any BDC school in any sport. J. City was led by All-Conference, All-South, and All-State performer Erin Glasco who signed to play softball at the University of Notre Dame. The Indians finished with a perfect 9-0 conference slate and were followed by Carmi/White Co. (7-2). Carterville and the Fairfield Lady Mules both finished at 6-3, while the Hamilton Co. Lady Foxes and the ZRC Lady Tornadoes ended the conference season at 5-4. Eldorado was 2-5 and the Elverado Lady Falcons were 1-8. Cairo, which did not field a squad, forfeited the nine-game conference schedule. Johnston City, CWC, and Carterville all won regional championships. Carmi/White Co. lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Pinckneyville in the ZRC sectional final while the Lady Indians defeated the Lady Lions 2-0 in the Vienna sectional championship. J. City's season came to a disappointing end with a 2-1 loss to Pinckneyville in the Pinckneyville Super-Sectional. Carmi/White County wins BDC baseball title. Bulldogs advance to Super-Sectional. The Carmi/White Co. Bulldogs won the 2005 BDC baseball title with a perfect 9-0 record. The Bulldogs were the only conference school to win a regional, and advanced all the way to the SIU Super-Sectional before losing to Nashville 3-2. The Bulldogs put away some stout opposition along the way, including SIRR teams Harrisburg and West Frankfort. In conference action, the Bulldogs were followed by Eldorado (8-1), Carterville and Trico (both 6-3),and Elverado (4-5). Fiarfield, Hamilton Co., J. City and ZRC all finished with identical 3-6 records while Cairo was 0-9.
