Football BDC Send 3 Teams to Postseason Playoffs; Carterville Advances to Quarterfinals The Carterville Lions ran the table in Diamond football action in 2007, finishing with an undefeated conference slate and defeating SIRR foe West Frankfort to end with an unblemished regular season. Second-place finishers Carmi/White County lost only to the Lions in week two and finished the regular season at 8-1. Fairfield’s Mules placed third in the BDC at 6-2 (6-4 overall) and advanced to the IHSA Class 3A Playoffs along with Carterville and the Bulldogs. The Hamilton County Foxes and Sesser-Valier Red Devils tied for fourth place, both ending the year at 4-4 and 4-5 overall. Johnston City finished in fifth (3-5, 4-5), followed by CZR (2-6, 3-6). The Eldorado Eagles and Elverado/Trico Falcons both finished with records of 1-7 in BDC play and 1-8 overall. In IHSA Class 3A Playoff action, Carterville edged Staunton 26-20 in first-round play, while Fairfield was overpowered by Columbia 50-22 and CWC lost a heartbreaker to Carlinville 31-30 in overtime. In Round Two of the playoffs, Carterville won a thriller at perennial power Tolono Unity, 7-6. The Lions met their match in the quarterfinal round, however, as they lost to eventual class 3A runner-up Columbia in the final game ever played at Lions Field.
Volleyball Carterville Wins Diamond West Fairfield is Perfect in the East; Christopher Lady Bearcats Win IHSA Class 1A Regional The Fairfield Lady Mules finished the 2007 BDC volleyball schedule with an unblemished 8-0 record to win the East Division conference crown. Eldorado was followed by the Carmi/White County Lady Bulldogs who finished 6-2 in the BDC East. Hamilton County finished at 2-8 in the division and 12-16 overall, while the Eldorado Lady Eagles were 0-8 and 7-19. In the BDC West Division, the Carterville Lady Lions also finished with a perfect conference record at 10-0. They were followed by Christopher and the Trico Lady Pioneers, who finished with identical 7-3 marks. The Elverado Lady Falcons and Sesser-Valier Lady Red Devils tied for fourth place with 3-7 conference records while the Zeigler-Royalton Lady Tornadoes were winless in conference play at 0-10. In the new four-class volleyball playoff system, Carterville advanced to the 2A regional finals, defeating Anna-Jonesboro before falling to West Frankfort in the championship match. In Class 1A, the Christopher Lady Bearcats won their first-ever regional volleyball championship, knocking off BDC rival Trico in the finals. The Lady Bearcats lost to Greenfield in the first round of the sectional tourney Post-season honorees were Christopher’s Lauren Mitchell and Lara Dawson (All-South, All-State), Emmalee Metcalf of Sesser-Valier (All-South, All-State), Danielle Stephenson of Trico (All-South), Alexa Callahan (All-South, All-State) , Rachel Runge (All-South, All-State), and Taylor Poore (All-South) all of Carterville, Paige Atteberry of Fairfield (All-South), and Emily Mouyard of Johnston City (All-South, All-State).
Cross Country CWC Lady Bulldogs Win BDC X-Country Meet; Eldorado Eagles are Boys Champs Coming on the heels of a conference track and field championship, the Carmi/White County Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways with the championship of the 2007 Black Diamond Conference Cross Country Meet. CWC dominated the meet finishing with 27points while Hamilton County (51),edged Carterville (53) for second place. Eldorado and Fairfield had no team scores in the event. First-team All-South runners were Chrystal Wells of CWC and Kali Bonner of Carterville, while Kelci Thomas and Kayla Follmer of Hamilton County were named to the All-South second team. The Eldorado Eagles were also dominant in the boys’ meet, winning the conference title with 25 points. Their closest company were the Hamilton County Foxes who finished second with 45 points. They were followed by Carmi/White County (73 points) Carterville (105) and Fairfield (106). Eldorado’s Barry Parks was named to the SICA All-South first team, while Tony Hendrick and Michael Sells, also of Eldorado, and Nick Burke of Hamilton County were named to the second team.
Golf CWC Sweeps Conference Golf Tourney; Hamilton County Boys Finish 8th at State; Trico’s Jamie Stocks Finishes 10th in Class 1A It was all Bulldogs at the 2007 Black Diamond Golf Tournaments, as both CWC teams won team championships. Both the Hamilton County boys and girls teams finished second. On the girls’ side, Carterville finished third and Trico fourth in the event. Rounding out the boys’ competition were Eldorado in third place, followed by Carterville, Trico, Fairfield, Zeigler-Royalton and Johnston City. Natalie Hendricks of Carterville won top medalist honors in the girls’ tourney, followed by Nicole Ojala and Megan Martin of Hamilton County, Chelsea Grider (CWC), and Katie Taylor (Trico).. Top medalist in the boys’ event Jake Smock of Carmi/White County, followed by Keelan Holloway (Eldorado), Keiston Williams (CWC), Donald Christensen (Hamilton County), Tanner Spicuzza (Hamilton County), Jamie Stocks (Trico), Logan Siefert (Carterville), Michael Molt (Fairfield), Josh Reed (Fairfield), Johnny Barrow (Hamilton County), and Aaron Jones (Zeigler-Royalton). At the Class 1A Boys State Tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, the Eldorado Eagles finished eighth in the team competition. Jamie Stocks of Trico was the BDC’s top individual finisher in 10th place. Jake Smock (CWC) finished 18th, followed by Logan Seifert (Carterville, 24th–tie), Johnny Barrow (Hamilton Co., 32nd-tie), Tanner Spicuzza (Hamilto Co., 49th-tie), Caleb Kirsch (Hamilton Co., 62nd-tie), Donald Christensen (Hamilton Co., 67-tie), Keelan Holloway (Eldorado, 67-tie), Michael Mott (Fairfield, 67-tie), Caleb Miller (Hamilton Co., 81-tie), and Levi Link (Hamilton County, 96-tie). The only BDC representative in the girls’ event was Carterville’s Natalie Hendricks who finished tied for 48th place. |
